New York bee killer - Diogmites basalis

Size: huge
From the size and the way it was flying, I at first thought it was a dragonfly. In flight it looks reddish.

Robber Fly
Looks like a robber fly to me, too. I've seen them eat damselflies, but not dragonflies.
