A gathering of wasps - Dolichovespula norvegicoides - Male
Clingmans Dome, Great Smoky Mtns NP, Swain County, North Carolina, USA

The Angelica at Clingmans Dome had its own "gathering 2008"! It was a feeding frenzy, with the flowers covered with wasps. We assume these are the same male wasps from our previous post. We seem to remember Eric mentioned something about Norwegian? wasps.

amazing find! i have never seen anything like this before! i did not know vespula males would gather like this i would love to find such a gathering

And i agree with Mr. Eric's ID partially... I'm fairly sure these are males of D. norvegicoides (he just got the genus wrong :). interesting find in NC... i did not know they ranged so far south
