This rove beetle was sitting prettily on a large orange fungus. After allowing me to take a few photos, it scurried off over the forest floor.

No, Ontholestes.
This is Ontholestes cingulatus, easily confused with Platydrachus until you have seen both. This species is more scarce in my experience, and wa-a-a-y more fleet of foot:-)
