Sesbania clown weevils (Eudiagogus rosenschoeldi) mating - Eudiagogus - male - female

Sesbania clown weevils (Eudiagogus rosenschoeldi) mating - Eudiagogus - Male Female
Spring, Montgomery County, Texas, USA
August 9, 2008
Size: Between .25" to .5"

Looks like it might be related to
Eudiagogus pulcher in the guide here, but can't see enough (and don't know enough!) to be certain.

I believe you are close...
They look like Sesbania clown weevils Eudiagogus rosenschoeldi to me.

http://bugguide.net/node/view/110029/bgimage

I have seen hundreds of the three species of these and all of them have been on sesbania. It appears these are on the same plant also. The leaves in the foreground show the same damage I am used to seeing.

You killed 2 birds with one stone!
I was wondering what that plant was and you named it for me! I looked it up on Wikipedia and that's it! Thanks so much for your help!

Glad to have help but...
Please keep in mind that I am not 100% sure of the ID on the weevils. John and Jane have been at this a lot longer than I and I have never known them to get an ID incorrect...

I really would like to get a top view on these guys if you could. That would make it much easier to get an accurate identification.

Have we managed to hide all of our mistakes
from you?? :)
We are also just amateur volunteers. We simply matched your image to some in the guide. Ron actually knows more about these critters than we, since we never see them. More images from different aspects would be good while we wait for one of the coleopterists to give you a firm ID.

More pictures...
Seems like they are always sideways... but maybe something in one of these other shots will help:
Sesbania clown weevils (Eudiagogus rosenschoeldi) on Sesbania bush

A couple of older, but closer pictures:

Horribly blurry...

Somethings I meant to mention before...
1) The pink tint helped push my thoughts to Eudiagogus rosenschoeldi
-and-
2) When I see these, I almost always see all three species on the same plant at the same time.

Please see HERE for images of all three species.

It looks to me that the above thumbnails are all Eudiagogus pulcher because of the break in the black stripe along the elytral margin and the overall color.

The next thumb has Eudiagogus pulcher and Eudiagogus maryae with the E. maryae being the smaller of the two.

Uh oh...
That link must be broken. I get a blank page.
Searching Google for images of Eudiagogus rosenschoeldi makes me think that the pink is wrong. It's nearly impossible to google some of these names and get images.

Sorry about the link...

The reason googling a name like "Eudiagogus rosenschoeldi" doesn't work well when searching for images is it looks for images named exactly that. I don't think many people would name their picture like that.

Every picture of Eudiagogus rosenschoeldi that I have seen has jagged lines seperating the black from the base color where both other species have straight lines.

E. rosenschoeldi

E. ulcher

Both of the above links are to Rice University images.

Again, the reason I was going with E. rosenschoeldi on your original image was the lack of a top view and the pink tint.
