Bald-faced "hornet"
This is a worker of Dolichovespula maculata, not a true hornet (Vespa crabro is our only true hornet, and is much larger than this insect).

 
a worker...
and an old one at that. 2 0f her 4 wings look slightly broken, which is a sign that she is old and getting to the end of her life.

i found a similar worker with a broken wing..

 
Probably...
Probably harvesting wood. We have workers that come to our new deck addition and they seem to really like the material for nest building.
