Black and White Fly - Spilomyia fusca

Black and White Fly - Spilomyia fusca
Adirondack Visitor Interpretive Center, Paul Smiths County, New York, USA
August 14, 2008
Size: 1/2 inch app.
We stopped into the Adirondack Interpretive Center yesterday on our way back to Brighton, Ontario. The garden swarmed with all sorts of insects. This fly looked for all the world like a Bald-faced Hornet mimic. Can anyone help with ID?
