Explanation of Names
Generic epithet from Greek olethreuonta meaning "destroyer, annihilator," a term used to describe the devil in Greek biblical texts (Corinthians, Exodus, Psalms/Tehillim).
Numbers
Occurs almost exclusively in the Holarctic region. Richly represented in the nearctic (about 90 species), many from the east in deciduous forests. (1)
