Anyone know what this is? - Promachus rufipes
Nellysford, VA, Nelson County, Virginia, USA
August 15, 2008
Size: 2 to 3 inches
Anyone know what this is? It scared my wife. I can't tell if it is some sort of bee/wasp or moth.

Thanks,

Orbman

Moved
Moved from Giant Robber Flies.

Actually
This is rufipes. P. hinei fades out as you move east and is replaced by this species. Very similar.

Beautiful photo!
I'd say Promachus female. We might have this one on bugguide.

Robber Fly
Not sure which genus. You can try looking through the images under Laphria or Promachus until you get an expert opinion.

Giant Robber Fly
Your lead took me to Promachus hinei.

Thanks!
