Size: 1/2 inch long
I am trying to find out what kind of bug this is. It was found crawling around "sucking" on a chair. When approached, it just crawled up on to my finger and made for an easy photo.

It really is looking like Spi
It really is looking like Spiny Tachina Fly (Paradejeania) is the name of this fly. I cant find anything closer, and it is a fly that would be in this region about this time of year.

 
Definitely a tachinid.
Hope you get a tighter ID than that, but it's tough to do. Distinctive wings may help your cause.

Thorax and face seem very dark; is that some photographic artifact?

The way it looks in the photo, is just about exactly how it looked in real life. Its thorax and face were black. It was the first I have seen one of these, and he was friendly enough to climb onto my finger.
