Redfemured Spotted Orb-weaver? - Neoscona oaxacensis

Redfemured Spotted Orb-weaver? - Neoscona oaxacensis
Riverbank, Stanislaus County, California, USA
August 17, 2008
Size: Almost 1 inch body
This spider was found on our back patio at around noon. It seemed to be standing on a web in a corner when we found it, but then moved onto the wall. The weather here has been pretty hot lately, even getting into the 3 digits (not sure if that helps). I had to get incredibly close with my camera to get a decent picture, and he or she didn't seem to mind at all. After some searching on the internet, the closest match I could find was a Redfemured Spotted Orb-weaver, but I'm not certain that is what this spider is. I'd really like to know if this spider is at all dangerous. If so, I'd like to relocate it to somewhere where we won't accidentally get in its way. :)

Moved
Moved from Orb Weavers. Looks to be a very lightly marked oaxacensis, most of the usual pattern is missing leaving just those small white "=" marks with black centers.

I can't ID it to the species, sorry.
It is an orb weaver and it is totally harmless. Relocating them is pretty easy though. Put a cup over them and gently slide a piece of thin cardboard under the cup. They build a beautiful web if you leave her.

I know it was a really long time ago, but I forgot to come back and give my little update. I did just simply leave her alone, and she ended up making her way to the corner of the yard to build an absolutely gorgeous web about 4 feet in diameter between a large bush and the fence! And of course there she sat, right in the middle for several days before the harsh weather came in :(

Just thought I'd post that bit of info for future info seekers! If you happen to spot one of these beauties in your yard, just wait and see what they can do!

Thank you for the reply! I think we'll just leave her be, and let her do her thing. :)

Nice image!
Just moving to spiders page for now, although I think I agree with Matt's family ID...
