Singing male Snowy Tree Cricket - Oecanthus fultoni - male

Singing male Snowy Tree Cricket - Oecanthus fultoni - Male
Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin, USA
August 18, 2008
Size: 17mm
This male sings every night -- I have to put the vase in a closet to subdue the volume. I believe he calls intermittently throughout the night since I heard him at 11:00 p.m and at 5:20 a.m. On 08/17/2008 I saw the male and female side by side on a leaf, and 5 minutes later the female was feeding from the male's metanotal gland while he sang. You can barely see the gland in this photo, it is the dark area on the top of the back. This photo points out how well they blend in with their surroundings, hence makes it difficult to find them.
