Mediterranean Katydid, Phaneroptera nana? - Phaneroptera nana - male

Mediterranean Katydid, Phaneroptera nana? - Phaneroptera nana - Male
Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
August 8, 2008
Size: 1 1/4 "
I've been seeing this small katydid species becoming more common in my area over the last few years. The closest match I've found on the web is here (in French, though). The male has some distinguishing brown marks on its back. Females are solid green. The male's "song" is a very faint scratching sound, that reminds me of a wristwatch being wound.

I have images of nymphs too, at various stages. Let me know if you want me to add them to this post.

Nice shot. Re: sounds...
I'm pretty sure there's a website with cricket sounds. Does anyone know it? Maybe there's also a site with katydids singin'?

Here's a song sample I found
It's very faint (same as in "real life") so make sure your speakers are on full volume, and listen close.

A pretty good representation of what I hear in my yard.

I agree.
I agree with your ID. The rough texture of the narrow tegmena (forewings) is pretty diagnostic, coupled with its restricted range in the states, of course:-)
