I photographed these in my backyard in July and honestly cannot remember the size. The wings look undeveloped. Perhaps an early stage?

Yes, a nymph.
These are nice shots of a nymph of the Carolina locust, Dissosteira carolina (single, deep notch in pronotal crest, lack of color on hind legs).
