What a great image! These are common late-summer and fall spiders in our area; they love to string huge orb webs across gaps between trees, often at head-height on people. They don't bite even if you twang a web and one falls on you, but it's startling to have a spider that size run down your front. I manage to run into (literally) a few every year when I'm working out in the field.
I'm moving this image to the Guide.

That was a fast response. The spider looks almost identical. However, the one I took an image of did not have any black markings on it - not even on the underside. Is it still the same arachnoid?

The markings on yours are a little faded, but this common species is very distinctive and unmistakable.
