fuzzy ant? - Dasymutilla coccineohirta

fuzzy ant? - Dasymutilla coccineohirta
Hume Lake, Fresno County, California, USA
August 21, 2008
Size: 1/2in.
caught this guy...he is pretty cool. When I went to catch him he went into a little plant and bunkered down. He made an interesting whining or buzzing type noise and vibrated the plant. Pretty interesting little fellow. Kinda looks like an ant and has fuzz all over.

Moved
Moved from Dasymutilla.

Dasymutilla coccineohirta
This one is Dasymutilla coccineohirta based on the length of thorax, width of head, and distribution. These are always fun and exciting to come accross.

Thanks!
Moving to species page.

it is a wingless
girl.

A Velvet Ant
in the family Mutillidae. Someone with more knowledge might be able to identify the species. Note the comment on the guide page that, "Some velvet ants can give an excruciating sting if handled."

Velvet Ant
Thank you for that warning. I always handle the bugs i catch with care because until identified, if I don't know what it is I handle it as if lethal.
I don't know much about the family tree...order, family, species, what is the order of description and what is the most specific, is it species? Thanks, Dustin

Yes.
Yes, "species" is the most specific identification. I can tell you with certainty it is a species in the genus Dasymutilla, but the specimen is worn (hairs rubbed off in spots), and I don't know if one of our other experts will be able to place it to species.

Moving -
to genus page.
