Monarch right?
Wings had a wax paper quality, different shine then most butterflies I've seen.

I've had migrating monarchs show up so worn that you could see through the wings (they usually look dark--not like Queens, but dark because what they're perched on shows through.) Somewhere I have a photo of a worn spring migrant perched on yellow water iris where you can see the green and yellow of the iris through the very faint monarch markings.
Moving this to Guide for species.

yep
as someone else here on BG might say, it's a "batterfly". This one is a male--you can see the two small black scent patches on the hindwings.
