When I took this photograph I had dismissed it as a Monarch but after looking at my other shots of Monarchs I don't know what this one is.

Why really common some years - hard to say, but probably a combination of favorable weather over a period of time, and a scarcity of parasites. Most species tend to become really abundant periodically only to abrubtly drop back down in numbers again until the next time things become really good for them.

A Black Swallowtail...i see i
A Black Swallowtail...i see it's enjoying u'r dill plant as i've now 9 on mine..........hope u don't mind them eating there as they'll become such beautiful butterflies once they hatch from their pupae

 
Dill Plants
Well these shots where taken at a local park, so I don't mind at all But this image was taken last year, which could explain why we've got many nice looking Black Swallowtails around this year :)
