Cow-Killer 2 - Dasymutilla occidentalis - female

Cow-Killer 2 - Dasymutilla occidentalis - Female
Alpharetta, Georgia, USA
August 13, 2008
Size: 3-4 cm?
Huge wasp!
I saw two of these while I was visiting family in Georgia. He said they tended to come out at regular times during the day.

This one was photographed in a plastic animal container that I brought to give my cousins. I use long forceps to move the animal to prevent being stung. When angered, it made a high pitched, whine from which I could feel the vibrations of through the tongs I was holding it with. Was it stridulatory, or perhaps made by other means?

I believe the males of these insects have wings, right? Which means the two individuals I've posted are probably females.
