Cicada ID please - Tibicen tibicen

Size: 2.5 inches
I'd like to know about this Cicada.

Could you please identify this Cicada? I'm fascinated by all that is going on with this little creature. What are the red dots on his head? Is the grille looking area on his face is mouth? How does his mouth work? When they emerge from their casing, do they pump up their wings like butterflies?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Tibicen lyricen (virescens), Coastal Lyric Cicada
Some may consider this "race" a separate species from T. lyricen, however, I believe most still consider it a subspecies or geographic form. This is a very common cicada in much of North & Central Florida. Although Tibicen tibicen (=chloromera) does occur in Florida, it is considerably less common and somewhat different in appearance (usually less black, greener legs, etc.).

The bright green patches on the black thorax are distinctive.

The red dots
on the head are simple eyes called ocelli. They are thought to assist in flight, among other things. The grille-looking thing is the clypeus, a plate on the head. I don't know why it's grille-shaped in cicadas and I looking forward to finding out.
