Ants 3 - Dorymyrmex bureni - female

Ants 3 - Dorymyrmex bureni - Female
Truck stop off of Interstate 20, South Carolina, USA
August 14, 2008
Size: 2-3 mm? (maybe 4 at most)
The area had clear only recently been developed, as the ground showed signs of having possibly been more wet at some point, possibly even prone to flooding(a river was not far from the site) prior to the area's development. the ground was very flat & strewn with cobble embedded in the dirt. the plants of the area were entirely short (couple inches tall) weeds & the earth it's self was a mix of sand (of which I'd say it mostly was) & some clay.

Anyways, there were two types of ants inhabiting this place (along with numerous tiny leaf-hoppers, mites, digger wasps, and small, probably wind-blown insects). This one was almost in constant motion, probably in search of food beneath the weeds.

Moved
Moved from Ants.

Dolichoderinae: Dorymyrmex
Disturbance and sandiness were the key habitat features determining the presence of this ant, Dorymyrmex bureni.
