I was at Fern Ridge wildlife area when I saw this large (¾ of an inch) wasp or bee like thing flying from flower to flower. I have never seen one like it before maybe someone can ID it for me?

ID
Sphecid wasp, maybe Sphex or Prionyx.

Sphex (Fernaldina) lucae
Thank You Andy for the ID. Now is it male or female?

Female.
Males look radically different (all black for one thing). Eugene? I thought they were only found east of the Cascades. Learn something new every day:-)
