Small Insect w/Proboscis - Stylogaster neglecta

Small Insect w/Proboscis - Stylogaster neglecta
Fairfield Glade (Cumberland Plateau), Cumberland County, Tennessee, USA
August 24, 2008
Size: Small
Saw this very small insect sipping nectar from my Butterfly Bush in the afternoon. Very slender w/clearwings folded over it's back. 4 or 5 body segments in black & yellow. Large round head. The most noticible things: a skinny tail w/white tip that pumped up & down AND a very long folding proboscis which seemed to come from it's abdomen.

Stylogaster, Agreed
Just going through some of the guide images and found one that is similar under, Stylogaster neglecta. Not sure if that's it but it looks close.

Looks
Like Stylogaster to me. Female.

Hard for me
to tell from the image, but it looks as though it may be a fly of some type. Certainly one I'm not familiar with if it is. I hope one of our experts will know it.
