Large bodied desert crawler - Megetra

Large bodied desert crawler - Megetra
Lidrith, New Mexico, USA
August 24, 2008
Size: 1.25 inches long
This was spotted at 3:00 on a hot afternoon, as it crawled in dry, sandy soil between clumps of sagebrush. It moved fairly quickly and was large!

This has got to be Lindrith, NM -
near Gallina.
Re. your beetle, though not much can be seen in this photo, the location, and general appearance, make it a probable M. vittata.
Try to get a sharper photo, they should still be around through much of September. They feed on herbaceous plants.

Blister beetle
of some kind.

Edit: much like this one here:

Funny how the body is so big the wings can't even cover it. I suppose its "wingless" and can't fly.
