Wasp with Prey - Tachysphex pompiliformis - female

Wasp with Prey - Tachysphex pompiliformis - Female
Brighton, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada
August 27, 2008
Size: 1/2 inch app.
This wasp was hauling the grasshopper across a sandy area. I was surprised that the wasp faced forward, most wasps I have seen with prey usually run backwards. The grasshopper was finally abandoned and although the wasp returned twice to look at it, it had not returned when I left nearly an hour and a half later. ID of the wasp would be appreciated.

Tachysphex pompiliformis, female with prey (ON)
Nice find! There are no Tachytes with red abdomen in Ontario. This female is out very late in the year. Peak activity is from mid-June to end of July. Species ID is possible because Ontario has a rather small Tachysphex fauna.

Tachysphex pompiliformis
Thanks again Dr. Buck.

Tachytes.
Tachytes most likely, but wait for confirmation from Dr. Ascher or Matthias Buck, please.

Thanks Eric. Naomi
