Gall on rose - Diplolepis gracilis

Gall on rose - Diplolepis gracilis
brossard, Quebec, Canada
August 25, 2008
These galls have appeared this year in large numbers on the lower leaf surfaces of a rustic rose. They look like they might be due to an insect, but I have not been able to find any information for galls that look like this on roses. I have not seen them in previous years, but the plant is generally in bad shape (fungus)this year, would this be a factor? Does anyone know what causes them? Thanks.

gall
There's a rose gall in Felt 1940 (1), Diplolepis gracilis, that looks very much like this one. This is a species of cynipid wasp; various species in this family, particularly in this genus, induce galls on roses.

I don't see anything else about that species online or in any other books, except that it does still seem to be a valid species. So I'm not sure I'd make a species page for it yet .... But, do you have photos from the top of the leaf, and from the side? That would be interesting to see, and may also help someone with the id.

Nice find!

rose gall
Joyce, thanks very much for your identification of this gall. After your reply, I have been in contact with an entomologist (Dr J. Shorthouse)who has done a lot of research on rose galls and he confirmed that it is Diplolepsis gracilis as you thought. The galls are only on the lower surface of the leaf, (so no photos from above) but are now starting to turn brown as they age.

I am very impressed that you tracked this down, and very much appreciate your help.

many thanks

that's great!
That's fantastic that you were able to get confirmation from someone who studies rose galls! Thanks for following up here with the info.

I made a species page for this wasp, and moved your photo.
