Strange bug - Megarhyssa macrurus

Strange bug - Megarhyssa macrurus
Warren RI, FariaFamily4 County, Rhode Island, USA
September 7, 2007
Found burrowing holes into a tree in the yard. Not sure if they actually sting but they sure do look like they do. Scary.

One of
the Ichneumon wasps. Maybe Megarhyssa, but I'm not sure. The "stinger" is her ovipositor, used to lay her eggs.
