dull dung beetle - Onthophagus hecate Hollis, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA June 20, 2005 Size: 8 mm
One of two species that entered a sun porch addition under construction. There was a vent from the propane-fueled water heater near the deck that might have attracted them, since the fumes included Dihydrogen Sulphide, a propane oderizer that is also a component of fecal aroma produced by intestinal bacteria. (It also produced water vapor, Carbon Dioxide and heat, which are three attractants for mosquitos. Not too hard to figure out how the Mosquito Magnet was conceived!)
This hypothesis may be all wet, and merely a desperate attempt to obscure the fact that they found *me* attractive!! However, I would appreciate feedback if anyone else has noticed dung beetles around propane exhaust vents.
