Mormon Cricket - Anabrus simplex - female

Mormon Cricket - Anabrus simplex - Female
north of Ward, Boulder County, Colorado, USA
August 5, 2008
Size: 27 mm (minus ovipositor)
More often green in the mountains (this one at around 8500 ft elevation), but on the west edge of the Great Plains not far away they are often pale brown. West from the Rockies in the Wyoming Basin, Uintah Basin, and Great Basin, all I've seen are darker brown, to nearly black.

very cool
I love the color!!

I like it too
It sort of helps offset the fact that they bite (moderately hard) and spit all over you if you pick them up. The males scold you too (a bit of a raspy sound).
