Unknown spider - Araneus gemmoides

Unknown spider - Araneus gemmoides
Stevens County, Washington, USA
August 29, 2008
Size: Unsure, maybe 1 inches
There are 2 of these spiders (in corners like this one) beneath our patio roof. They just sit there. One of the spiders sits above the concrete, so below it are lots of droppings and bits and pieces of whatever. First of all, is it "dangerous"? I don't think most spiders are; I'm just scared of them!! And secondly, of course, what is it? Thanks.

Harmless Orb Weaver
in the genus Araneus - maybe Cat-faced?

gemmoides vs. gemma
Hi John and Jane. I found a site that explains a visual difference between these two. See Spider Watch.

That's great! So this is
Araneus gemmoides, then?

Araneus gemmoides
Thanks for your IDs. "My" 2 spiders certainly look more like the pictures of the A. gemmoides and not A. gemma, so I'll start calling them "Kitty, kitty"... Freaky still, but very fascinating.

based on the comments
in the link, I would say yes.
