Plebejus acmon ? - Plebejus

Plebejus acmon ? - Plebejus
Aromas, San Benito County, California, USA
August 29, 2008
Size: ~2cm wingspan.
Seen in our garden, on Eriogonum giganteum. I'm guessing Plebejus acmon but Plebejus lupini is very similar, although Shapiro & Manolis, 2007, Field guide to butterflies of the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento Valley regions, say it may not occur in this area. Looks similar to . (live oak/chaparral habitat).

for whatever it's worth...
I'd be inclined to guess P. lupinus b/c the orange bands are more orange-y, whereas P. acmon is supposed to be pinkish orange). Additionally, the orange on acmon should be capped by metallic blue, which I see on the sample photo's hindwing, but not on the one you have. I'm basing my guess on info in Brock & Kaufman, p.133

can't tell them apart?
I was out in Kern County in June and the locals said that it wasn't possible to tell them apart in the field because of variations. So we just called them acmon/lupine.
