What appears to be a Harvestman with curious structures - Phalangium opilio - Male
Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA

What puzzles are the two protuberances between the forelegs as well as the "extra legs" as if there is another spider underneath. Any expertise would be welcome.

Moved from Harvestmen.

Definitely Phalangium opilio
Family Phalangiidae, Phalangium opilio Linnaeus, 1758. Also, it's a male.

The chelicerae are the most central bits sticking out toward the front: these "cheliceral horns" are an easy way to identify the males of this European invader species in the field (females don't have horns on their chelicerae).

Thanks!
It's wonderful to have someone with some opiliones expertise on the site. Since you're an editor, you can move this image to the species page if you'd like...

Glad to be of help. :)

You might want to unlink this from that sheetweb spider image. Only images of the same individual should be linked. :)

Very much resembles Phalangium opilio

Compare:

The protuberances are his chelicerae, which are distinct in the males on this species.

The "extra legs" are his pedipalps.

Moving -
to harvestman page for now. Let me know if you're confident of the ID, Jebus, and we can move to genus or species page?

I'm not an expert, and I don't deal with harvestmen often, but I'm not aware of any other species with these features. Might still be good to wait for an expert.

Thanks for the info. Very interesting, and look forward to learning more.
