I don't think I would ever have figured this one out.

The SBMNH beetle database lists 3 species in CA.

Trogossitidae: Eronyxa sp.
A troublesome beetle, as this group doesn't look like the other members of this family. There is one common species in California, possibly more - can't remember. A very nice photo of this species.
