Looks like Polistes
In Arizona there are many possibilities. Others will comment.

Pretty much the commonest species in Az, P. navajo.

Hi Gordon,
It is good to see you on Bugguide! I disagree with the ID. Polistes comanchus navajoe shows a very different colour pattern. This should be a male of either Polistes major castaneicolor or P. canadensis. I find the two difficult to separate based on images but the former seems to be much more common. In any case a good find since we have very few images of either species.

How to identify??
Are there any separatng characters that I could photograph that would separate Polistes major castaneicolor from P. canadensis. Also would appreciate any comments about how to separate these two species. I have access to an active nest, many are still found on my daily walks. Greatly appreciate the comments.

You are quite right Matthias.
You are quite right Matthias. That is what I get for looking at these things with too little sleep. You are spot on.
