Cicada trapped in the web of a Golden-Silk Orbweaver - Tibicen linnei Cicada trapped in the web of a Golden-Silk Orbweaver - Tibicen linnei

Only a few days old.
Judging by the markings of this specimen it may be either T. davisi or T. canicularis. Also looks to be a male. Was it making the buzzing alarm sound when it was trapped in the web?

Tibicen
Not T. canicularis - that is a northern species. Sorry, I don't know the Florida species.

Thomas J. Walker
Thomas J. Walker of the University of Florida indicates that T. canicularis is one of 19 species of cicadas that can be found in Florida. I too thought that they were a mostly northern species. Of course another possiblity is this is Tibicen linnei (Linne's Cicada).

Gerry reports
"This one keys out to be T. linnei again for the extreme bend in the costal margin. Compare it to this specimen:it is almost a perfect match."

Sound
It was silent and only struggled when we freed it. Thanks for the help.

Then definately only a day or two old.
Then that supports my comment on the other image of this specimen. It's definately only a few days old then. For some reason, after a cicada molts from the 5th instar nymph stage, it takes several days after it molts to reach sexual maturity.

If it was older than a few days, it would've been making it's tell-tale buzzing alarm call even when handled.
