Paracotalpa ursina

Paracotalpa ursina "Questing" - Paracotalpa ursina
Carrizo Plains, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA
April 7, 2008
Size: Body Length ~17mm
These were part of a large group of Paracotalpa ursina in a patch of fiddle-neck (Amsinckia tessellata), many exhibiting the strange "questing-like" behavior shown here. That is, they would hang nearly horizontal by a few tarsi for long periods of time---motionless, belly-up with legs outstretched. I speculated that perhaps they were waiting for mates to fly by and grab a hold of, but I witnessed no such activity. Maybe they were suffering injury from the pernicious prickles of the Amsinckia, though many seemed to voluntarily land and crawl about on the plants. They were alive...if I touched one it would start to move, though not very energetically. And if I placed one on the ground it would walk away. I'd be interesting to know if others have seen this curious type of behavior, or might know what it's about.
