Leafhopper of some kind? - Microcentrum

Leafhopper of some kind? - Microcentrum
Lake County, Illinois, USA
August 31, 2008
Size: Approx 2 3/4"
I found this insect resting on the side of the house in the early morning. I believe it was waiting to be warmed up by the sun, because it left the siding about 2 minutes after the sun's rays were on it. He got his leg stuck in a spider web but was able to extract it. Then he found something to eat in the web before he took off. He was fun to watch! Is this a leafhopper of some sort? Thanks ahead of time! (I uploaded side view of same individual.)

Female angular-winged katydid.
This is a female, genus Microcentrum. As far as I know, in North America, only Amblycorypha has the odd "pink" individual.

Thanks Eric. . .
for the ID! A fellow flickr member photographed a pink one last July (genus Amblycorypha, as you say) in Lake Forest, Illinois; & it made the news in the "Chicago Tribune."

"Oriental" Katydid
Not sure on species if there is more than one. These are related to Crickets, not sure if they are in different family though.

There is also a pink form which I believe is rare.

The "mite" may be part of the leaf-like wings. Was there one on the other side too?

Thanks for the feedback.. .
Borealfalcon. I wasn't able to see the other side of the insect. But I looked through photos of Microcentrum: and I see no such "mark." So who knows what it could be?

The odd thing I forget to mention is that this insect seemed to make a noise--like a low moan. This photo was taken early in the morning; & the katydid & I were the only 2 in the vicinity. I was quite close to it with my camera; and it sure sounded as if this insect was making the noise. Is that possible?
