I think I've seen this spot on all four of our Vanessa species (more often showing on bottom side than top), but it is common on this species, fairly common on V. atalanta, and very rare on the other two. Can be missing on all of them too. Beautiful shots by the way. In the other shot it looks like he may have been using one flower as a stool to get into another? - interesting.
