Polistes flavus eating Papilio cresphontes - Polistes apachus

Polistes flavus eating Papilio cresphontes - Polistes apachus
Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
June 13, 2005
I kind of staged this shot, since the 'meat' it was eating had already fallen off the leaf. I simply put the meat out of the ants' grasp and back to the wasp's.

Moved
Moved from Polistes.

Polistes, but not P. flavus.
This is a different species of paper wasp. According to one authority it may be an undescribed species. P. flavus is much larger, with deeply violet wings. Nice captures of the caterpillar-hunting behavior!

Polistes apachus?
Eric: This looks to me like a very yellow apachus. I have seen similar specimens of apachus from Texas in collections. Apparently you have some further insights on this. Can you explain? For the time being I will moe it to apachus.
