This critter was found attached to a towel left on the back porch. Do they make cocoons that loose? Or is this a spider's food cache?

Cocoon
There are definitely cocoons this loose, for example the cocoons of many noctuids. It would be interesting to see what emerges if you hang onto the pupa. Is the silk actually that golden color, is that an artifact of lighting?
