Merope tuber
Moccasin Lake, Winston, Douglas County, Georgia, USA
September 2, 2008
Size: about 18 mm
Attracted to porch light. Was clinging to glass sliding door. Any help with ID would be appreciated.

It looked like the 'face' of a mecopteran to me, and this is the only one I found with that wing shape.

Yes it is similar. I have additional images and I plan to crop them and probably add if they show anything of value to get an ID. But the description does fit. It looked vaguely similar to a Lacewing, but it does hold it's wings flat. After I took several images, my attention went to a moth, I returned hoping to get some more shots of it, the insect had vanished. If it returns, I'll try to capture it.

I think any images you add of this quality would add value to the guide--you can see how small the collection of images is, and yours is probably the best. Looks like yours is probably a female, but a side view would remove any doubt.

great find
This is a great find of a seldom-encountered insect. There's only one North American species in the family (two in the world),
Merope tuber
, so you can move it to that guide page.
Seems like they come to lights occasionally--we have a couple of reports from porch lights. Very cool!
