Emerald Moth Caterpillar - Synchlora

Emerald Moth Caterpillar - Synchlora
Daphne (Village Point Park), Baldwin County, Alabama, USA
September 2, 2008
This Synchlora aerata looper (based on Wagner's "Caterpillars of Eastern North America") disguises itself by attaching chewed flower petals to its back. I left it with a different colored flower, today. We'll see if changes its costume. If it survives me, this cat will likely end up a Wavy-Lined Emerald.

Wagner points out that from Maryland south
aerata begins to be replaced by frondaria and numerous other species in Florida and Texas. Doesn't sound like this would actually be aerata. What do you think?

Think You Right
Figured this one out while helping someone else with a Wavy :)
