Melanoplus species
It looks like M. femurrubrum (Red-legged Grasshopper), a last instar nymph (almost grown up); however, there are a lot of species in the genus Melanoplus in Kansas, so I'm not entirely sure if it is this species or another related. If there are adults (with long wings - and the coloration will be quite different) to go with the nymphs, that might help to make it certain.

Thanks David!
I grew up in Kansas and had forgotten how prevalent they are in the late summer! With every step I took, grasshoppers of different shapes/sizes and colors jumped and flew away! I have a few more pictures to add from my trip but I don't think there are adults of this species included in them.
Thanks for your help.
