Mating Praying Mantis - Stagmomantis limbata - male - female

Mating Praying Mantis - Stagmomantis limbata - Male Female
Reserve, Catron County, New Mexico, USA
September 3, 2008
Size: About 3 inches
The larger one I found out is a female praying mantis, but I don't know what species. She has been on the same sunflower we planted for at least 1.5 weeks since I first saw her. Then I found the smaller mantis with her, and discovered they were mating, and that he would become "lunch" afterwards. Went out the next day only finding her. She proceeded to move to another sunflower (I planted only 4 sunflowers in our small veg.garden). When will I find "eggs" and where? What species is she? Is this typical behavior to stay in one small space? If the eggs are in the garden, what do I do with them, when I dismantle the dead/frozen remains of the veggies & flowers this fall?

Praying mantis egg case question
What ever you do, DON'T bring the egg case into your house for the winter! The eggs will hatch and you'll have tiny nymphs all over the place. That happened to me on a Christmas tree many years ago. When I find an egg case in my garden, I put it on a shrub or another plant that will be left alone. The egg case will overwinter and the following spring the nymphs will hatch to start the cycle all over again! Isn't it amazing how much smaller the male is than the female?
