Salticid - Phidippus clarus - male

Salticid - Phidippus clarus - Male
Norfolk, Virginia, USA
September 3, 2008
Size: ~11mm
Found in tall grasses. Very hard to get a shot other than frontal. Spider seemed very interested in the big eye looking at it. I could not get a dorsal shot of it before it jumped down into the grass.

These images can be frassed as they are not the best quality. I have never seen a jumper like this and I'm interested in an ID.

I am
Going with male Phidippus clarus. And see what happens.

Yes...
it's an adult male P. clarus.

Thanks!
Herschel, Don.

LOL!
Your "not the best quality" images are my dream shots!! :) I'm pretty sure this is a jumping spider in the genus Phidippus - among other things, those metallic green chelicerae are distinctive... Jay or another expert will be able to tell the species, I suspect...

Thanks Ken!
I just wish I had more angles to shoot before it jumped into the green abyss. I looked and looked, but it wasn't going to show itself.

I was shooting another large jumper on a windy day some time ago. I remember it releasing a strand of silk into the breeze and para-sailing away :^)
