I think your right but....
Check out the comments I placed under figure 14311. Your beetles here exemplify exactly what I'm talking about. I can convince myself that they share some aspects of both parallelus and villosus. I've collected large series thinking it will help me figure it out but it just gets worse. I don't even try any more!

 
I know I'm supposed to say Thank You...
But for what? Visiting the small hell of uncertainty upon me? Anyway, I guess I appreciate your efforts to find an answer. Maybe the two species hybridize a lot.
