What happened to this spider? - Argiope aurantia - female

What happened to this spider? - Argiope aurantia - Female
La Jolla, San Diego County, California, USA
September 4, 2008
Size: body was almost 1"
...and here is a photo of the same spider a day later. What are the white scratches/markings that have appeared on her? I'm new to spider/bug study; is this some natural process I haven't learned about yet? Hope this is the right place for this posting. Love this site!

Fungus?
It looks very much like some of the fungi that grow on Asiatic ladybugs. Did it get any bigger?

Could you tell if the discoloration was on the surface? Did it look like there was a bite out of the spider and it was leaking this or could it have been fungus or bird dropping?

I didn't see any
wound or leaking or anything like that. The discoloration almost looked to me like a slight roughing up of the surface of the spider's body. I suppose it could have been fungus, although 24 hours seems like an awfully short amount of time for the fungus to become so prominent (of course, I am far from an expert on anything in this realm). Also, it seems strange to me how the white discoloration follows the pattern of the spider's coloration in a few spots...I will be walking by this spot again in a couple hours, and I'll try to see if she's still there and if the discoloration has changed or anything.

Well,
I went to check on the spider again, and I found her web, but I couldn't find her. Her web seems fairly new, but there are a bunch of fuzzy seeds (from the plant that it's attached to) that have blown into it, so I'm not sure how old it is. I guess this means that either she's hiding out and I just can't see her (maybe that she relocated?), or that she is dead. I'll check again tomorrow when I walk by that spot.

The spider is gone
I've checked that spot several times in the last week, and it looks like this particular spider has disappeared.

what happened?
It looks as though it had been attacked by an unknown predator and managed to survive.I have seen much the same thing after watching a large bumblebee escape from the beak of large brown bird which I could indentify.

Thanks for the info
I had also wondered if maybe the spider had been attacked, but was unsure if anyone else had observed anything like this. It seems like a definite possibility.
