Size: 2.5 in
Very striking colour when it flew--bright rusty red. One of the largest grasshoppers I've seen.

Orange-winged grasshopper.
I'm pretty sure this is Paralophora phoenicoptera. The blue inner face of the hind tibia ("thigh") is distinctive. I'm certain of the genus at any rate:-) Great image of a pretty wary insect.
