Spiny oak slug caterpillar - Euclea delphinii New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, USA August 28, 2008 Size: ~15-20mm
Taking these photos was literally the last thing I did on my way out of New Orleans last week. I made my ride stop in at the lab on our way to the airport, so I could get some pictures before it pupated. I can now see that in my haste, I didn't focus them all that well, but what's done is done.
These were taken through a dissecting microscope, so the entire animal didn't fit in the frame. At this resolution, though, you can see how gorgeous this caterpillar is - I love the "dewdrops" all over its surface.
