A. irroratus? - Anthrax irroratus

A. irroratus? - Anthrax irroratus
Topsham, Orange County, Vermont, USA
September 2, 2008
Size: ~9mm

Thanks Joel
The thing that got me wondering, is that this one is twice the size of this other one I saw.

Size
There is often extensive variation in the size of individual bee flies of the same species. I've recorded specimens from 5 - 10 mm long for this species, and even larger ranges for some other species. It's most likely due to variation in the size of the prey for the developing larvae.

Anthrax
Yes, this is A. irroratus.
