On Red Alder leaves.
When disturbed, it slinked down off the leaf, onto a stem and pretended to be part of the stem, head down.

Wonder if this might be Phyllodesma coturnix - haven't found any images of it yet :(

Two more photos
I added a couple of photos. This caterpillar has been hanging around on the same small alder, at about the same height from the ground, for several days. I haven't seen any similar caterpillars on other alders nearby.

It reminds me of a lappet moth
I don't know what kinds you have out there, but here might be a place to start browsing.

Update: A HOSTS search on family Lasiocampidae and host plant Alnus - see here - turns up only tent caterpillars (Malacosoma spp.) and Phyllodesma americana. The latter looks like a possibility to me, but wait for others to comment.
